Mt. Akagi Travel October 2020 Part 1

Mt. Akagi is located in Gunma Prefecture in Maebashi. It is a popular place for many things.

There are three approaches coming to the big lake of this mountain which is also the caldera called Onuma lake. One approach is from Numata called route 251,  another is Route 4  from Numata and Route 16. Route 4 and 16 is both from Maebashi. I used the Route 4 during my first 2 visits here because I was staying at the Youth Center for teaching. From route 4 you can see the big Torii gate, before going up.

You should buy your necessities at   the convenience store around these area since it will be your last store. Also there are many restaurants,a michi no eki, an onsen, small pension stays, ahead of these gate, farms specially the corn farm nearby. Going further up after the restaurants you will see and hear the fast river along the side of the street. It's a clean and lovely river if you like to record a river sound. You can also see of course beautiful trees along the winding road up now. You can see some tire prints along the road. Those drifters they call them by that, and the sport is called drifting enthusiasts, those screeches like crazy in the middle of the night if you stay here overnight. The roads around these mountains of Mt Akagi, Mt Myogi and Mt Haruna are used for that sports enthusiasts and also became popular thanks to the manga Initial D etc.
Mind you it's not okey though to the police. The route 251 going to Numata I used going to Kawaba then home after my stint here. I want to use route 16 next time out of curiosity because it seems to be the favorite of the drifters because of the dangerous narrow road and curves, I heard and also check the sceneries out there too.
In winter the route 16 is closed and they even have a gate between the Mt. Jizodake and the Nigorinoyu entrances. The other 2 routes are open but the visitor center and camp ground by the Onuma river is closed at the start of winter season which is in the middle of November. Ridiculous.
I stayed overnight in October at one of the parking lots near the Onuma lake because of no place to stay on a moments notice even at the campground. We need to have a reservation. But anyways, I am a natural adventurer. I love sleeping in my cozy sleeping bag inside my always safe car in a safe and well maintained public facilities of Japan. Need I say more about how I find it so safe driving around  Japan as a solo female adventurer? Of course sometimes I use cheap accommodations, campgrounds, airbnb's, and sometimes indulge too depending on the situation. This blog of  mine is all about cheap traveling, so ride along okey?
So after our classes on our first day the Youth Center at the foot of Mt Akagi at around 3pm, Lorena, Angela and I went up to Mt. Akagi's Onuma lake. It was my first time to go up there because the previous year I used the public transportation, and thought that next time ISA gives me the chance to be here at Maebashi again I will definitely bring my car to explore and upon requesting and convincing the office that I am a responsible driver for a long time, and so  they granted.
It was a beautiful ride and the excitement of first timer is always like a kid, scared, excited and eyes roving around the scenery. Ahhh as always nature is beautiful. But we have to hurry up to catch the sunset if ever the sunset is nice, though there were beautiful sceneries to stop and take a photo, I only decided to stop once to try to take a photo of the zigzag road but then it isn't the best spot, So hurry and drive, we passed by a nice falls that Lorena saw. but I said if we stop we cannot catch the sunset at the lake, so we go.
I never knew that there were many birch trees here. They were beautiful in an all white trunks, Mt Akagi has a big birch tree park and I promise to be back here to walk around and take more close up pictures of nature.  We arrived at the Onuma just as the sunset were making its own beautiful palette. We got so excited and out of the car we all went our own ways to find nice spots for photos. You can find Lorena's at her own handles and Angela's at her own page. I've got some here and there and more at my picfair photo blog https://www.picfair.com/users/ShirleyMC     And a compilation at my youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQq8OKd8ZK1ZS2qCHRB7zVg
